Memes & Their Copyrights

Posted under Tags

Recently, someone removed Invincible (series) from the vast majority of Think Mark Think! (meme) and someone updated a majority of Sad Cat Dance (meme) to be both Chainsaw Man and Higashiyama Kobeni. And then not even 3% of Jack-o' Challenge is tagged Guilty Gear, much less the origin character.

So this is to say that there's flat out no standard practice when it comes to tagging memes with their origin series or character and that I think it would be beneficial to have a semi-solid way of this.

I believe that memes should be tagged with their origin copyright when it's a very obvious scene reference with an obvious copyright, such as the Mark meme just mentioned. I further believe that they should not be tagged with the relevant characters without obvious cosplay. Past that, I'm honestly not certain. And, frankly, I'm not too strong in my first stance...

Memes should just have a note about their origin in their wiki, rather than messing with other tags with unrelated characters and series. If you are looking for Guilty Gear related pics, I don't think the intended result is to see a ton of Genshin Impact characters doing the jack-o challenge.

I feel like that scene reference posts should be tagged with the origin copyright, but if a meme gets it's own tag it shouldn't be tagged with the copyright anymore, until then it's fine.

This sounds reasonable to me. Scene reference is basically useless without something at least indicating what copyright is being referenced, but if something becomes enough of a meme to get its own tag, then it runs the risk of polluting the original copyright/character tags.

im in favor of memes always getting their originating copyright so people can A. see that the meme came from that copyright B. search <copyright> meme to see more

as for characters, its probably a bit more up in the air, because things like jojo pose need to have a character tag so you can search ex. giorno_giovanna jojo_pose to get those

E.g. Memes like Broly Culo shouldn't be in Dragon Ball searches.

When it comes to memes, the copyright should be tagged only if something about the copyright is evidently in the picture.

For example, Sailor moon redraw challenge (meme) should only be tagged with bishoujo senshi sailor moon if a character from said copyright is being depicted. Users don't want to search for bishoujo senshi sailor moon and see hundreds of completely random unrelated characters and nothing from the said copyright other than the fact that it's based on a specific frame from a specific episode.
The same could be applied to Think Mark Think! (meme). Does users who search for Invincible_(series) wants to see dozens of posts of random/unrelated characters to the series doing the same pose over and over? Probably not. The main problem here is that both of these memes will drown content about the copyright itself (E.g. actual fanarts of characters from said copyright).

On the other hand, Kono dio da (meme) posts will always have the depicted character ALSO mimicking Dio's pose and facial expressions. Users who search for Jojo no kimyou na bouken likely want to see Jojo references and Jojo poses, so it makes sense that Kono dio da (meme) will get tagged along with the copyright it originates from.

We have jojo pose for the poses, which IMO should work exactly like the meme tags: tag it for the poses but don’t add the Jojo copyright tag to not pollute it with non-Jojo characters, unless something else in the image warrants the Jojo tag.
