Should gemstone tags imply gem?

Posted under Tags

Is there a reason these are *_gemstone instead of *_gem? I've messed up while tagging quite a few times because I just type "pink_gem" and press enter, assuming that's the correct tag since the main tag is "gem".

Edit: Looks like it's because they can also apply to crystals. In that case, should the others be implying gem?

Well, if the other tags are implied to it, it had to be done. There's no other way around it.

Gem and crystal are not mutually inclusive and there are posts where one should be picked over the other. If the colour tags imply gem then it makes this no longer true. Something needs to be fixed, whether it's the name or existence of the colour tags or the wikis and the linkage between the two tags. That's unless these colour tags should specifically only apply to gems.

The original issue was that technically "gem" is for smooth gems, while faceted/cut gems are called "crystals", so "gemstone" was chosen as a middleground. I stand by what i said in forum #208077 though. We should just rename these tags to _gem and be done with it, the ambiguity here is only in our heads.
We're an anime site, not a jewelry site, and nobody's going to care about minutiae like these when searching or tagging. In fact, these names are more likely to cause confusion simply because the first thing you think of when you see them is not "ah, this is a tag for cut and smooth gems both, marvelous!" but "why the fuck are they calling them gemstones".
