This has popped up at least once before in picture comments-discussion and I want to start using it--let's develop a tag for art that's "real", as in pencil art, watercolor, oil paintings, crayons, and so on. This would be as opposed to art drawn (partially or completely) on the PC, which this site is of course dominated by.
The tag would be useful because it's something that people want to find specifically (for example LaC has expressed a specific appreciation for handdrawn art), and it's also informative. I don't think that a tag for each drawing technique--pencil, watercolor, etc.--would be very useful (and it's also sometimes difficult to tell) although there might be some point where that could be implemented.
Anyway, there were a couple suggestions raised in that thread that I remember. If anyone remembers the comments-thread about this subject, feel free to link that, also.
I put them here in order of how much I like them.
1) "analog" -- this is in contrast with "digital". It's logical, short and to the point. On the other hand, there are lots of things that are called analog (from synthesizers to circuits), so it could conceivably cause a bit of confusion.
2) "traditional media" -- this is used in DeviantArt (yes, I know) as a broad category which includes all of this stuff. It's very clear, but it's long, possibly hard to remember and a bit pretentious. I like this almost as much as "analog".
3) "handdrawn" -- not my favorite since to me anything that isn't rendered or calculated is handdrawn, but that's probably due to convention. Anyway, it's also easy to remember.
Any thoughts? I used "analog" on one image, I'll probably be tagging a few more with that, but of course when we decide on the best one I'll mass edit if necessary, and write a wiki entry to clarify the use of the tag.
Discuss away!
