Slow mod approvals

Posted under General

I would be glad to moderate pictures to help the mod approval stage go faster. Kind of frustrating when I have a lot of great pictures to share but can't upload because no-one has approved the ones I already posted, and have been sitting there for a week

Images do not sit in the mod queue for a week. They are deleted after three days if they haven't been approved by then. If they weren't been approved, it's not because no one looked at them, it's because they weren't good enough.

Looking at your profile, I see over half your posts have been deleted. The more of your posts are deleted, the more your upload limit shrinks, and if it shrinks to zero you'll never be able to upload anything again ever. You need to slow down and lurk more to see what's acceptable around here.

I haven't seen the mod_queue being slow, in my view, it really depends on what you upload and the quality of your stuff. I find asking a janitor if I think a picture is borderline is very helpful for determining which pictures to upload or not.

At least for me, I only upload 1-4 things at a time unless its an artist who has been consistently approved or if its part of a larger comic. I feel the system is slow for a reason, and in general, its meant to make you take a moment to think about what you should post. In most cases, lurking or asking what janitors look for, good or bad, is a good idea.

But a good place to get specific advice on why your posts are getting deleted is to post some of what you think are the better ones in the "upload feedback thread", forum #45532, if you haven't already.

I'd believe that if it were completely true; it's not. I can't speak for GaikotsuAkunin's pics, but I've seen a good number of quality pictures go unapproved that after some appealing, got undeleted. Spouting that line does nothing to prove that there isn't some sort of laziness of incompetence on the part of some mods if not outright abuse (Like that time where a mod nuked all of Rifyu's comics)

The upload feedback thread would work better if there was actual feedback more than once a month.

I'd say try to appeal the pictures and see what happens after posting in the the upload feedback thread.

I's annoying though how the first comic page of the Iron of Yin and Yang side story hasn't been undeleted while the later two were.

I'm arguing because the appeal system wouldn't need to see so much use if not for the increasing cases of Mod laziness/indifference. And wasn't the appeal system made due the possibility of a slip up on the Mod's end.

But what I'm really saying is that the Mod Queue works... not so much some of the mods themselves

I've encountered slow approvals often enough as well. From my experience I'd say the better an image the faster it gets approved. Some images get overlooked, but consistently slow approvals usually show you're doing something wrong and should think about raising your quality level.

Pro tip: Explicit images generally have a harder time getting approved for various reasons.

If you haven't already you should take a look at this.

To err is human, but generally the mods do a heck of a job.

While its an upward battle, I haven't seen any moderator laziness in my posts. The OP received a negative record for bad uploads, for one, and the quality of the uploads aren't wonderful.

I've heard before that some janitors aren't doing a lot, I haven't seen anything to indicate that the moderating staff is being lazy.

As for the Iron of Yin and Yang, if its really that important, you can directly contact a janitor regarding it. I've gotten other comics undeleted by using the deletion appeal thread.

The vast majority of approved posts come from the mod queue, not the appeals queue/thread. From what I can see, the mod queue is working just fine. The good images get approved quickly and the not so good images get deleted. You can see what's getting approved here.

Though who might be a janitor by chance?

You can see a listing here. There's about 50 people with approval privileges. I'm not sure how many are active at a given time, but I'm almost certain at least 20 look through the pending posts every three days. I, personally, haven't been as active as much I used to be (due to family medical issues), but I try to look at the mod queue (and the appeals) at least once or twice a week. Also, I do in fact look at every image in there.

For me, if I skip over an image, it's almost always one of these three reasons:

  • Poorly drawn.
  • Extremely average.
  • I didn't like it.

I would comment on the images in that thread, but I would just end up repeating myself every post.

Looking at the current mod queue, everything more than two days old has been "passed on" / "hidden" / "passively disapproved of" by at least 11 janitors, mods, or administrators; so you can assume at least that number clear the queue on a more or less daily basis. Most items in that range were passed on by between 12 and 16 people.

If something sits in the queue for you for more than about a day, chances are everyone in that dozen daily checkers has seen it and basically given it a thumbs down, and hidden it. In the next two days it's possible one of the mods who checks in less frequently, or a regular that missed a day might save it, but the chances become slimmer the longer something persists in the queue.

By the three-day deletion mark you can be pretty certain more than a dozen people have seen and turned down an image. Sometimes things fall through the cracks and that's what the appeal thread is for. Also since people are more likely to appeal better images, it's not surprising that a largish number of them get re-approved.
