offtopic?

Posted under General

One of the images I uploaded got deleted with this as the reason.

Problem is, I don't know what the heck the mod/admin/janitor in question meant by "offtopic." What's offtopic about it? Unless there's some obscure ruleset to what images you allow and do not allow that don't show up in the upload area as ground rules before uploading, I don't understand why it got deleted.

And if there IS some obscure rule out of the public eye, can you link me to where it's stated? I'd also suggest making such rules much more visible for people who want to contribute to danbooru.

maybe they didn't "get it"? unless you've played SH4, it might not seem like anything funny/interesting since you wouldn't know how stupid Cynthia and Henry are.

the image is a little bit ugly, though, to be honest.

I don't think it's that because most comics, you can see through to how it has a direct link to the source material on some level. Even if it were that, I don't really see how that would count as offtopic. I was under the impression that even if the art was something completely unlike its source (a character cosplaying as another, for example), it was still accepted.

Perspective of image quality is something that seems like it would be labeled something other than offtopic. I'd expect "bad art" or something like that for the tag if they thought it was horrendous art.

It looks like toon shit. That's probably why.

If that's it, okay. It doesn't look toon to me, but if that's what it seems like to the mods/admins/janitors, okay. I just had no idea "offtopic" meant that if that's the case.

It's not so much about it being not approved, which I normally wouldn't mind being the case if there's a reason behind it that I understand. Just throwing the words "offtopic" on a post without explanation.. doesn't work. I have a much greater likelihood to think it was deleted because it doesn't appeal to that mod's personal tastes but they couldn't find an actual reason to get rid of it, so tossed on "offtopic" as an excuse.

...I already said earlier in the thread that off topic refers to images out of scope for danbooru. American/western artists are usually considered out of scope for Danbooru, and so whoever deleted it would have been using that definition.

Off topic = out of scope.

Off topic = out of scope.

But does "offtopic" always mean American/western artist (and I must say that I don't know if that's american or japanese; English text implies american, but that's not always the case)? Or are there other things that fall under the "offtopic" umbrella?

There's a certain quality to a lot of the art on deviant art that makes it easy to identify. This isn't to say that there aren't good Western anime-style artists (or to imply that all Japanese artists are good), but most of us seem to agree that art style doesn't really fit in with the bulk of the good content on this site. Your image in particular falls in line with that. While we can argue what off-topic means exactly, a lot of it is subjective. And it's that subjectivity that hopefully lets good stuff in and keeps bad stuff out, regardless of source.

No, just assume exactly what I said. That off-topic is out of scope.

In addition to most art by western artists, something like, say, real porn is off topic too. So would be a photograph of a Ming vase. Or today's NASDAQ stock market charts. Or a screencap from The Lion King. Or a picture of your mother. Etc.

But I happen to believe a picture of my mother is VERY on-topic for danbooru!

I'll bear that in mind then, thanks for giving me good examples. Before you did, it sounded like all someone would have to say is "I think it's off-topic" to justify deleting something they don't agree with. Those actually elaborate to give a good idea of what you mean by that.
