Dunno if you saw this or not, but I found this explanation in one of the images with the tag:

I think the idea is to have a tag for this sort of character grouping -look, which is often seen in FF ads, like this for example: http://www.zomgwtf.net/RandomPicturesNstuff/misc/FinalFantasyAdvert.jpeg.
post #9965 would be another example of this - I'm sure there's more too, but it's a pain finding them without any surefire way to look them up.

Anyway, gununu is not notably more "direct" than caramelldansen. All memes go through a third party fan filter before being solidified.

And here's where we disagree. I say it *is* more direct, because it's a direct parody of the IM scene, whereas all caramelldansen pics are parodies of the meme which itself is a parody of popotan. They're not parodies of popotan per se, but of that very specific association of the song and visuals, regardless of whether the parodying work at hand has any sound at all. This is evidenced by both our tag and the Japanese term for it (ウマウマ), both of which refer to the song, as well as things like post #201008, which don't even refer to the visuals. This makes caramelldansen a separate entity on its own, distinct from all other possible parodies of that popotan scene. Ergo, caramelldansen has one more layer of indirection compared to gununu.

I'd question if that should even have the tag, or if probably less than 1% of the images under a tag somehow invalidate its main (visual) point.

And remember that I'm saying we shouldn't implicate copyrights for any of these memes - gununu, just_as_planned, yukkuri, caramelldansen or otherwise. Use the wiki, and make sure to cross-reference between meme and copyright.

It's misheard lyrics of the song, obviously it needs the tag. And just to point out that even pictures clearly refer to the song as a part of the meme, here's a sample:

That's already far above 1% of 240 pictures tagged with caramelldansen. Notice also that the references to ウマウマ are somewhat more common in the earlier pictures, further strengthening the link between the song and the meme's origin.

I'm aware of that. And I'm saying that we should for some and not for others, based on whether they're first- or higher-level derivations of the original copyright. Which, at least for me, is perfectly unambiguous in all of the cases you cite.

So if there is no implication should the opposite be true, remove the tags from existing images tagged with it when not pertaining directly to the original series/character?

gununu needs to be cleaned out if so (a bunch of the first few that were posted are tagged ana + ichigo)
