Hate me if you will, but I feel this whole Kisaragi thing is being blown out of proportion. I assume most of these admirals you see saving Kisaragi probably haven't even as much as notice the poor girl before this. Hell, I always seen her and Mutsuki as more of a nuisance because of their quest, as with the other girls like Ooshio, Asashio, etc. I'm surprise that they were even able to get a role as main ships in the show. It would have been nice if she was actually remembered and become popular for something significant, rather than the fact that she got Mami'ed just so people can feel sad for her.
That and making such a big deal about sinking ship-girls seem to be...too much of a big deal. Most people I know sank more than enough to make even Nagato cry.
Keo, you and your friends does not represent the entire fanbase. Trust me, there are more people who like or love Kisaragi than you think. I had seen quite a few players who has the Mutsuki-class as waifu, some at level 150, even before the anime.

I mean, yeah of course I know that. I'm just saying it's kinda sad that the thing Kisaragi is being popular for is basically just some bullshit sob-story. Even the whole way she sank was bullshit, getting nuked right the hell out of nowhere. You could literally replace her with anyone of the other girls (Ooshio, Arashio, Wakaba) and you can see that this whole thing doesn't do anything to make her as a character popular but to make people feel sad or to piss them off.
I love Samidare. I would dance for joy if she had gotten a role in the anime and hell even became one of the main ships. If she became even more popular I would cry tears of joy, but I wouldn't want her only to be known as the girl who was shot down because the show wanted to pull a Madoka on us.
But, whatever works for people, I guess. I'm just saying anyway.

To be fair, the way the real life Kisaragi sank was pretty bullshit as well.
(A stray Hellcat dropped some small caliber bombs which might as well be firecrackers, but managed to ignite her depth charges, blowing up the whole ship catastrophically.)
But yeah, the timing of her sinking is done poorly (barely any screentime for the viewers to be attached), so yeah, bullshit sob story, especially to people who are not familiar with the source material or the Pacific War.
Especially the way the aftermath was handled in the next episode.
Well, ya. I hate that half-assed death too. If you are gonna kill someone off, do it better! And don't pop up the deathflags all over the place! They gave Kisaragi too little character development to have a dramatic effect (which probably why people react badly to it)
BTW I heard that episode is written by a different writer, so hopefully the other episodes will be better.
Thing is, if we're going by real-life history, Miyuki was sunk way before anyone else in the game. Kantai Collection doesn't really set out to recreate history except in the VERY loosest sense. (Although that one was an accident, and I'm sure it's partly that they want to put the blame on a "faceless bad guy" rather than invite hatred for Inazuma by playing up an accident for maximum drama.)
After all, if they WERE playing it by historical terms, freaking EVERY destroyer in the cast gets sunk besides Hibiki, Ushio, and Yukikaze. Nobody short of "Kill 'em all Tomino" would take a cute girl with military gear story and genuinely afflict war attrition upon them. (And you'd get sick of seeing all the screentime So-class gets murdering 1/3rd the cast...) The fans would be out for blood.
