Kotatsu ain't shit if you're used to actual central heating in your house and insulation in the walls, like a normal house in the West does (or even a fireplace, like Warspite spoke of). It's nice, but Ido's giving Japanese comforts too much credit. Given how good the rest of the comics are, though, I just roll my eyes when he does this and let it go.

I disagree. Heating cannot be understated. I loathe concrete and rebar because of how poorly such materials are in insulation and ventilation being tied to a central ventilation system with many highrises.

It's more of an American and British thing that only really became popular after the Simpsons' "cheese-eating surrender monkeys" remark.

It took its biggest traction before the invasion of Iraq in 2003 when French made it very clear they will never support that shit, especially on such flimsy accusation. Different strokes for different folks in different places I guess. Here, concrete and rebar is something you'd definitely want to have unless you want your house blown away by hurricane-strength winds.

Also, it's not like you can't insulate concrete and rebar, it's just a bit more expensive to do so.

Of course, in Japan, most of the rooms that have a kotatsu also have the wall-mounted air conditioner (usually the living-type room in a 1L or above). And that you're also supposed to wear a hanten or something, which keeps the upper half warm - I think the theory is that the direct warmth on the legs travels up to the core later.
