I'm convinced that 90% of the social effects of alcohol are not due to the substance itself, but due to the "common knowledge" of its deleterious effects. For example "when someone drinks alcohol they act drunk", therefore when I drink alcohol I can freely act drunk and blame it on the alcohol.
Which would be why someone drinking a non-alcoholic drink could still "become drunk".

Nah, clearly you just never drank stupid amounts of alcohol before. Some people do act like a drunk just to gain some attention, and it is annoying, true. But if you can somehow manage to drink ~1 liter of vodka in one sitting (it's hard, because you will be close to vomiting and every shot is going to be fight over keeping your innards to yourself), you won't remember the next day, and whoo boy, everything could happen in-between.
