This reminds me of that episode of Haruhi Suzumiya where they are playing that crude space war computer game and their imagination is way more detailed than the actual game.

On another note, you would think that being based on aircraft carriers, the school ships would have some kind of ICAO-compliant runway for air transport services (as opposed to using a dirt field like in "der Film"). Even the Ooarai school ship, one of the smaller ones, could easily fit a 10,000 foot runway. Some sources estimate that the ship has an overall length of 7600 meters (nearly 25000 feet). Even a ~6000 foot runway can easily take 737s, like at the airport in Burbank.

In regards to Hana's question, anything of that nature would probably be under the Operations Department of the ship. It doesn't appear that the school ship has any combat capabilities, but if it had combat functions similar to a US Navy aircraft carrier, the space where stuff similar to the first frame occurs is the Combat Direction Center (CDC). (On smaller vessels it is often called the Combat Information Center (CIC).) Normally, the person sitting in the chair with (delegated) weapons release authority is the Tactical Action Officer (TAO). TAO is a watch position where a pool of qualified people work out a rotating schedule to cover the duty. It is usually stood by mid-level officers (LT and LCDR) although this can vary. It would be rare for the actual Commanding Officer of the ship to sit in the TAO seat, as the CO has to keep track of a lot more stuff than just what is going on in CDC. I think most people in the service would consider having the CO take the weapon controls to be micromanaging.

In the GuP universe, I wonder who is actually in charge of the entire school ship. There are a bunch of adults living in the town on the "flight deck", and I kind of doubt they would want minors holding the responsibility for their safety. The high school students (who wear the green and white serafuku) don't seem to run the ship, so I figure somebody in the chain of command above the "Naval Studies" students would deal with that stuff. Whoever the buck stops at would need to be someone who has the experience and ability to manage the needs of tens of thousands of people.

I think you need to rewatch OVA 3 about the schoolships. The purpose of the schoolships is to teach the students to be independent in order for them to be capable when they graduate. Also they stated there that everything in the ship is operated by Naval Studies students and every department was supervised by the former Student Council President Anzu and I think it is now inherited by Hana.

Looks kind of like a Dessler Cannon.

I remember watching the School Ship OVA a super long time ago, but I don't remember where I watched it. It doesn't seem to be on Crunchyroll where I first watched the show around that time. Looking at various references, there are supposed to be 30,000 people on the Ooarai ship, and it's about as massive as the Executor from Star Wars. Having spent many months aboard ships with just ~5,000 trained adults aboard and seeing how insane that gets trying to run everything smoothly, whoever chooses to take on a similar responsibility over 30,000 people should comprehend the immense weight they are carrying. I think it has been established in various forums that the GuP universe has no shortage of absurdities, but I am just pondering the scale of the operations that would be involved.

I believe it's supposed to be based of the wave motion gun from space battleship yamato. They say similar things in the anime too such as "bulkhead closed" and "wave motion energy at 120%". The first panel might also be a reference to captain okita's chair on the bridge.

It is, but the WMG on carrier is from Dessler's red battlecarrier whose deck can rotate to bring that thing up.
