Well, yeah. But with a gun and boosters that big, if you need a shield then something has already gone terribly wrong.

It's definitely used for their trademark move: Zaku Tackle. Bigger booster + Bigger shield = bigger momentum = heavier damage.
Too bad Gundam universe still uses mainly the 'everybody's flying upright in space' trope so we can't have sick battles that ain't space robot soldier simulator.
