There's something that occurred to me recently, when I was writing nes gamepad.

When they released the original Game Boy, did they use the NES color scheme for it in all regions, including Japan?

The original Famicom is red and white, and the controllers are red with a golden or white front plate/decal, and all the buttons are black. When Nintendo redesigned it into the NES, they changed to a grey color scheme: the controllers are grey with a black front plate/decal, and the d-pad, select and start buttons are still black, but the A and B buttons are bright red.

On this site depictions of the original Famicom and its gamepads greatly outnumber depictions of the NES's, yet original game boys (up until the GB mini and GBC) are overwhelmingly in NES colors, with red A and B buttons.

Based on a quick search and looking through a bunch of Japanese launch ads for it? White with red buttons seems to have the look they went with across the whole world.
