Heh, my point was "One of these things isn't like the rest". That being said, was human sacrifice actually common in early Japan? Not familiar with that period, so if that's the case do forgive my ignorance.

Human sacrifice was practiced everywhere, its just a matter of "when". That said, yes Japan (at one point) practiced human sacrifices. The "why" varies wildly as expected.
