film reel

A circular metal container composed of a central spool with which a strip of film is wrapped and side rims that help to retain the film. It can be inserted or affixed to a projector to play back video. When not in use, a film reel may be stored in a metal film canister.

Not to be confused with the similarly appearing magnetic tape, a form of electronic data storage that may also be used on a reel.
