kabuto (helmet)

兜 冑

The kabuto (兜, 冑) is the traditional, Japanese samurai helmet, composed of a solid metal skullcap (hachi or kabuto-bachi) and hanging, articulated plates (shikoro). Its main function was to stop blade strikes to the front of the head more efficiently.

More ornate kabuto may have crests and decorations known as datemono, and many were secured to mask-like facial armor known as mengu rather than be strapped around the chin due to their heavy weight.

For the Pokémon of the same name, see kabuto_(pokemon).
