stirrups (riding)

Stirrups are ring-shaped footholds that hang by straps from each side of a saddle. They improve one's ability to mount a riding animal and stay in the saddle.

For hosiery that has stirrup-like loops across the wearer's soles but leaves the heel and toes exposed, see stirrup legwear.

For the braces that support the patient's legs during a pelvic examination, see gynecology chair.
