moving leg_garter to frilled_legband and deprecating it

Posted under Tags

BUR #10288 has been rejected.

create alias leg_garter -> frilled_legband
remove alias leg_garter -> frilled_legband
deprecate leg_garter

See topic #20792 for the full discussion on garters. These tags are a mess. I'm actually getting a headache trying to make sense of them.
leg garter is currently a mix of legwear garter (formerly garters) and frilled leg bands and frilled legwear. There's also a lot of stuff like post #5332504 (thigh strap) sprinkled in. It'll have to be cleaned up before this BUR is approved.

BTW there's also ankle garter. Maybe rename to frilled ankleband? We already have ankleband. Maybe imply frilled ankleband to frilled legband?

Please post thoughts.

Since you changed it to frilled legband instead of frilled legwear, I agree with the BUR. The problem is that everything related to garter is a legacy from the old booru, we have neck garter, arm garter, ankle garter and for some reason, we have wrist cuffs which is a mix of what would be wrist garter like post #5349798 and its vast majority of the cuffs used in formal clothing and playboy bunny outfits, for example post #5349752.

As much as I know that opening many can of worms at once is the sure way to scare everyone out and getting nothing solved at all, renaming some tags while leaving other ambiguous would only solve half the problem and we'd need to address the problem again later anyway, the names should be consistent with each other, so we could solve this for good. I'd vote for leaving "garter*" tags at minimum and changing it to frilled_*, as you proposed.

Will our users know what a "wedding garter" is if they can't even tag a "leg garter" properly, nor can they distinguish between thigh straps and garter straps?

I think it'd make more sense to use a term used elsewhere on the internet and that will bring you actual results that match what we're trying to tag than a made up name that no one else uses that if you tried to search the internet with will bring you nearly no results of the thing we're actually trying to tag. Furthermore if using the term that will give you the correct results everywhere else on the net still results in people not being able to tag it correctly, then no amount of making up fake names to try and be completely unambiguous about what the thing is will fix the problem.

While "wedding garter" is more common in results than "bridal garter," we'd probably want to use bridal garter to match with bridal gauntlets naming.

That's why I proposed a generic "frilled legband" tag to replace the current leg garter. Our users don't know what leg garters are, so they used the tag as a dumping place for all kind of frilled bands worn around the leg (and even non-frilled bands because again, nobody is going to google "garter" to figure out what it is, they're just going to click related tags blindly if they don't know a term). Hence, we might as well just call it frilled legband, because that's what the tag is mostly being used for, and because it's a tag name that makes it immediately obvious what you're tagging.

Note that wedding garter would still have ambiguity with legwear garters.

It's not that our users don't know what leg garter is, it's that the term leg garter is also used for any decorative band worn around the thigh by itself, which is why if you google the term you'll also come across various leather bands worn around the thigh being called "leg garters." Renaming it to bridal garter would resolve that by removing the broad "leg" part which helps to make the tag seem like it cover any type of decorative garter to "bridal" which would narrow the term to refer to decorative lacy/frilly types warn around the thigh.

The ambiguity with legwear garters is a non-issue, because bridal style garters are a decorative garter not meant to hold up stockings. While a long time ago they would have been the same type as what is under legwear garters, modern ones are designed to serve the function of being a kind of novelty as part of the garter tradition with weddings.

The only thing going for frilled_legband is it's descriptive, but that's it. Next to no one actually uses that term for garters anywhere, so trying to alias over the common term used everywhere else to a completely made up term no one uses should raise red flags that the proposal isn't a good idea.

BUR #19225 has been approved by @evazion.

create alias thigh_garter -> bridal_garter

The same reasons can be applied as with leg garter to this tag. Wikiless tag with a little over 50 posts and seems to be used as a replacement tag for bridal garter. I came across this tag as I didn't remember the name for the bridal garter right away, so this should work as a utility alias well.

"thigh garter" as a name is just terrible even as an alias, it could refer to literally any type of band worn around the thigh that people already tag "x_garter", including legwear garter , so even if (and only if) everything currently under thigh garter is indeed just bridal garter (i have not checked), i think it's better to go for a mass update instead
