neon genesis evangelion
A mecha series created by Anno Hideaki, initially with GAINAX and now with his company Studio Khara. It has mechanical designs by Yamashita Ikuto and character designs by Sadamoto Yoshiyuki.
Set fifteen years after a worldwide cataclysm called the Second Impact, in the futuristic fortified city of Tokyo-3, the anime follows Ikari Shinji, a teenage boy who is recruited by his father Ikari Gendou to the shadowy organization NERV to pilot a giant bio-mechanical mecha known as an Evangelion into combat against beings known as Angels.
Originally planned as an exaggerated parody of the traditional super robot mecha anime genre tropes at the time (according to creator Anno), it surprisingly became an extremely successful and long lasting franchise despite its mentally and socially troubled protagonists.
The franchise began as a manga published in Shounen Ace in December 1994 to generate interest for the upcoming anime TV series released in October 1995. The anime went on to become one of the most popular anime of all time, leading to many spin-offs and reimaginings in various media.
