A gun that combines the automatic fire capability of a machine gun with the cartridge of a handgun, and is usually between the two in weight and size. The term "submachine gun" was coined by John T. Thompson, the inventor of the Thompson submachine gun, to describe its design concept as an automatic firearm with notably less firepower than a machine gun (hence the prefix "sub-").
During World War II they were a key element to most military arsenals, but the advent of the assault rifle which deals more effective fire range and damage has relegated them mostly to vehicle crews, police units and covert operations use.

A subset of submachine guns are machine pistols, which are SMGs similar in size to ordinary handguns (and in many cases, simply full-auto variants of pistols). Since concealability is the goal for machine pistols, they usually have shoulder stocks that are folding, collapsible, detachable or even completely absent.

The following guns are classified as personal defense weapon. Technically an intersection betwen SMGs and assault rifle. They fire smaller caliber handgun rounds with sharper tips, designed for higher velocity and of course better penetration against body armor. Such rounds resemble miniature intermediate rifle rounds.
