There's can't be this cute (80 posts) for parodies of the first volume cover and can't be this cute 2 (6 posts) for parodies of the second. All posts tagged with the latter are tagged with both, but no implication exists.
Implicate can't be this cute 2 to can't be this cute?
Remove can't be this cute from can't be this cute 2 posts?
Move can't be this cute to can't be this cute 1?

Implicate. You may as well implicate Can't Be This Cute 3-6 while you're at it, should they ever pop up.
If the decision is made to create Can't Be This Cute 1, then implicate everything to Can't Be This Cute.
Although I'm not convinced Can't Be This Cute 2 was all that necessary to begin with.

Not true. If the parody has its own tag a lot of people don't seem to think that also adding the series it's parodying is necessary. It's a problem with more than just Can't Be This Cute, too.
I made that "can't_be_this_cute_2" tag first. At that time I thought: "Let's create it for a meanwhile, and see how many pics will appear."
Now, I propose removing can't_be_this_cute_2 tag. That's enough to tag them as can't_be_this_cute.
Given that the pose is different, I think it would be worthwhile to be able to distinguish them.
I think a narrow definition approach is better, particularly that the tags should only be used for a specific cover pose. If we broaden out the single tag too much, then I honestly don't see a reason to keep the tag, as it becomes nothing more than a cover_page parody ore_no_imouto_ga_konna_ni_kawaii_wake_ga_nai search.
I don't think can't be this cute 2 should imply can't be this cute. The CBTC2 posts all reference the poses seen on the second volume cover, specifically, which is what distinguishes it from the original CBTC tag.
can't be this cute 2 is used infrequently enough that just sticking with can't be this cute for them all should be fine IMO. Especially since we've now got a parody of the 4th cover (post #781475) under can't be this cute. It's all variations on a single meme; no reason to make multiple tags out of it.

This is correct. In fact there's a good reason to do it, since you should be able to search parody + (name of the series) to find all parodies about the series. There's no reason to make an exception here, so I've gone through and made sure the series was added.
Now that I've done it, one thing I'm wondering is if the can't_be_this_cute tag should be used only for the volume 1 cover pose specifically or if less specific parodies (or just parodies of the phrase) should have the tag. We could just leave oreimo parody to cover those instances.

It may not have ended in a "Hey everyone, we're going to do this from now on" with a yea-or-nay vote consensus, but both threads leaned rather heavily toward keeping the meme's origin tag off, especially forum #26109 with richie's rebuttal to every argument for keeping the origin tag. Otherwise we would've implicated every single parody tag a long time ago.
Did you ignore the part where I pointed out this specific instance?
If that's the case, then pictures mostly tangential to the cover page like post #740481, post #777663, and post #589402 shouldn't get the oreimo tag. We're running straight into the "iconic" debate again.
Not to mention meta-parodies like post #764559 and post #759206 are now lost in the shuffle.
We could go with having the can't_be_this_cute tag refer to parodies involving the title name of the series, and have can't_be_this_cute_1 and can't_be_this_cute_2 as tags that refer to specific parodies of the cover art poses.

Perhaps we should make a specific tag for those kind of parodies (meta-parody?). I think solutions where we add tags work better than ones where we destroy them. This isn't a meme like caramelldansen that's only tangentially related to its source - they're parodies of a phrase and pose that happens to be central to the series itself.
Blanket deletion causes big problems with posts like post #782612, where there is a seiyuu_joke in the mix. That's a very specific parody (all series referenced should always be tagged with a seiyuu joke, as well as the name of the seiyuu) and the tag was deleted twice, possibly without paying attention to the content at all.

I still think simply tagging all of these cover parodies with can't be this cute should be sufficient.

Honestly I agree. We usually don't try to break meme tags down to such fine-grained levels of detail and it seems like a bit of overkill to me.
